The government is considering demolishing buildings located in Ngaliema Bay, not far from Kintambo. This is to combat the flooding that has recently caused devastation in the city of Kinshasa, where both material and human damage have been reported.
During a raid conducted on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, by MCP, the occupants of the O'Bwira site in Ngaliema Bay denounced the relentlessness of certain authorities in the country who are determined to demolish this area.
"We have been living here since 2008. It's been 17 years since the Congolese state granted us all the documents required to settle here. It's bizarre that the same state is considering demolishing everything," said Mayamba.
These occupants claim to have permanent decommissioning orders duly issued by the relevant authorities. They are demanding justice and requesting the intervention of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, the supreme magistrate.
"In the 17 years we've been here, there has never been a flood. Our houses don't stop the water from flowing. Why doesn't the government instead demolish the river city, which is the source of the flooding in Kingabwa? Why don't they demolish GG Mart?" asks Cardinal, accusing some members of the central executive of wanting to undermine the Head of State's mandate.
"We would like this site to look like South Africa, Morocco, or Dubai, where private individuals have built next to the water, for the beauty of the city," added a sixty-year-old, who even revealed that there are plans to develop a beach, which will attract tourists. It should be noted that members of the government, magistrates, generals, and other high-ranking officials also own buildings on this site. "In the event that our houses are demolished, it shouldn't be selective," concluded John Katembo, who hopes the authorities will reverse their decision.
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior, Jacquemin Shabani, raided the site and ordered a halt to construction work.
Well before him, the Minister of State for Land Affairs, Acacia Bandubola, was on site, as was Prime Minister Judith Suminwa.
